چکیده

Several studies have shown positive associations between non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM) and incidence of colorectal cancer. This relation, as well as the marked similarity of dietary and lifestyle risk factors for the two conditions, has led investigators to propose that hyperinsulinaemia may be the underlying link between NIDDM and colorectal cancer. It is thought that raised insulin levels, either indirectly or directly, may promote the growth of colorectal tumours. 3 Thus people with an inherited susceptibility to colorectal cancer and who also have NIDDM may be expected to be at even greater risk of colorectal cancer than from either risk factor alone. One measure of inherited susceptibility is family history of disease—an established risk factor for colorectal cancer. 5 We therefore examined the relation between NIDDM, family history and risk of prevalent colorectal cancer among middle aged and older British adults using data from a large population based study.

Self-perceived Mental Health Status and Uptake of Fecal Occult Blood Test for Colorectal Cancer Screening in Canada: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background While colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most preventable causes of cancer mortality, it is one of the leading causes of cancer death in Canada where CRC screening uptake is suboptimal. Given the increased rate of mortality and morbidity among mental health patients, their condition could be a potential barrier to CRC screening due to greater difficulties in adhering to behaviours...

The interaction of socioeconomic position and type 2 diabetes mellitus family history: a cross-sectional analysis of the Lifelines Cohort and Biobank Study

BACKGROUND Low socioeconomic position (SEP) and family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) contribute to increased T2DM risk, but it is unclear whether they exacerbate each other's effect. This study examined whether SEP reinforces the association of T2DM family history with T2DM, and whether behavioural and clinical risk factors can explain this reinforcement. METHODS We used cross-se...

RESPONSE: re: prospective study of adult onset diabetes mellitus (Type 2) and risk of colorectal cancer in women

BACKGROUND The remarkable similarity of lifestyle and environmental risk factors for type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus and colon cancer has led to the hypothesis that diabetes may increase the risk of this cancer. We prospectively examined the relationship between diabetes and risk of colorectal cancer in a cohort of 118403 women aged 30 through 55 years who were without previous...
